The Research and Development Engineer is directly responsible for the engineering research of the National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies (NCIBT) leading the development, design, implementation and oversight of scientific research and operations. This includes using advanced physical sciences and engineering concepts and project management to autonomously lead the NCIBT operations, collaborative and service projects, and expansion to Aggie Square.

Direct day-to-day operations of facility and ensure long-term viability through facilities oversight including equipment maintenance and acquisitions. Under the general direction of the faculty co-Directors of the NCIBT, the position will actively support the mission of the NCIBT contributing to the strategic direction and supporting the development of proposals and strategic partnerships. The incumbent will serve as engineering subject matter expert and project manager by providing information and advice to Principal Investigators, Clinicians, and external collaborative partners. This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of a research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of biomedical imaging and intelligent analytics (AI/ML). The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field.

The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. The individual will independently collaborate with the partners on Campus and School of Medicine to fulfill the engineering and scientific mission of the NCIBT for internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position

  • MS or PhD in Engineering or Physical Sciences.
  • At least 1 year of research experience at the senior engineering or scientific level.
  • Experience with specification, design, fabrication and testing of photonic-based technologies
  • Experience with processes and methodologies for product and optical technology development (i.e. product specification, risk analysis, verification/validation plan, SOPs.).
  • Experience with clinical applications of optical technologies in oncology and cardiovascular research and applications.
  • Experience with regulatory standards applicable to photonics and biomedical devices (i.e. IEC 60825, IEC 60601, ISO 10993).
  • Experience coordinating research.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and conducting educational training
  • Proficient with design and computation software (i.e. CAD, FEM, Optical design, MatLab).
  • Familiarity with design, simulation and advanced fabrication of medical device/surgical instrumentation mechanical system components that require integration of software control using laser based manufacturing, and commercial-grade 3d printing technologies and Augmented or Virtual Reality displays.
  • Proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to interact and communicate with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Strong organizational skills to meet numerous established deadlines and flexibility to respond to changing priorities and crisis management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and provide guidance to team members.

  • Experience with managing academic research projects and/or program

Department Overview

The NCIBT will advance two optical imaging technologies developed at UC Davis — interventional fluorescence lifetime imaging, or iFLIM, and interferometric diffuse optical spectroscopy, or iDOS — and combine them with an AI-deep learning platform to provide real-time guidance of decision-making during medical and surgical procedures.

The center will support research and development, clinical application, and training and education of the new technologies and promote their adoption to improve the quality of interventional health care.

This Center is administered within the Department of Neurological Surgery with substantial stakeholders in the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering.
